About
The Kawaii Black Girls Movment

The Origin Story

In the early 2010's there were many small communities on facebook dedicated to different east Asian styles and cosplay. Even smaller were the groups made for and run by black girls. Some from this era that were very noteable were the "black gyaru", "black lolita", and "black ulzzang" groups. The confidence, beauty, and aesthetics from many of the black girls in these groups inspired The Creator to make the first ever Kawaii Black Girls facebook page in 2014. At this time there were many facebook pages dedicated to various kawaii styles and aesthetics, but NONE solely dedicated to black girls who wear and enjoy them. The KBG fb page came through to not only showcase the black girls who love kawaii style, alternative fashion, cosplay, and gaming, but it also showed many black girls who thought that they couldn't that they 100% CAN!
As the page began to gain popularity and spread through various communities many black girls began to want the ability to submit their own content with the desire to be recognized as a fellow kawaii black girl. At first the KBG fb page took submissions via dm and posted them on Sundays. Over time the page grew to more and more popular; from the hundreds to the thousands to the tens of thousands and so on. It started to become very difficult to keep track of the amount of submissions being sent to the page, but there still had to be a way to find kawaii black girls to post for representation and for them to find each other and form a bigger community. Suddenly a new solution emerged that started a movement across multiple social media platforms: #kawaiiblackgirls was born~!

How the Community Grew

When the first kawaii black girls page began to grow and grow it inspired many others to create even more pages and groups on Facebook. The creation of more pages meant even more presentation and even more representation expanded the community further! #kawaiiblackgirls had its first posts on instagram, but over the years began to spread to other social media like tik tok, tumblr, and twitter too!
The community reached an all time high in 2020 as many people had more time inside to discover more about themselves and the styles they love. Now, there are not only more black people wearing kawaii fashion than ever, there are also so much more people willing to support and uplift us as well.

The Continuation, The Expansion, and The Real World

In 2023 the main goal for the Kawaii Black Girls movement is to be a more established page and organization across multiple social media platforms, grow as a team to keep pushing the narrative for more representation around the world, and create as well as foster lovely new core memories for people in the community via entertaining and safe events both online and offline!

Because of all the love and support you have given #kawaiiblackgirls throughout the years in the virtual world it has been decided you all deserve that same love in return in the real world...

Respecting and Appreciating Culture, Improving Asian and Black Relations, and Eradicating Bigotry

An extremely important aspect of The Kawaii Black Girls Movement is attempting to improve the relationship between Asian people and Black people. There are countless number of people on both sides who love, enjoy, and appreciate each other's culture. However, unfortunately, there is a number of people on both sides who are uneducated and hateful towards one another. Many of the hopes for this movement involve bringing about more education, more love, more understanding, and more respect for both Asian people and Black people for the world and for each other.
While there are many Asian people who discriminate against Black people and Black culture, there are also many who truly do love and respect us. One of the goals for this movement is to reach out to more of those people and garner their help and understanding to create more representation for more Black girls in the world of kawaii fashion, art, anime, and gaming as well as fight against harmful, gross stereotypes against Black people that exist in many Asian countries.
In addition, there are many people in the Black community who are prejudice and hateful towards Asian people and still use jokes and phrases with harmful stereotypes and slurs. This movement operates under the golden rule: "Treat people the way you want to be treated". Together we can learn to call out and protest antiblackness without becoming the same bigots we despise.
Another extremely important aspect of this movement is learning how and teaching others to appreciate Asian culture in a respectful and mindful way. Kawaii Black Girls stands with the AAPI community as a whole and it is never our intention to promote the appropriation or disrespect of any Asian cultures especially Japanese culture which is what this movement is heavily influenced by. Our goal is to promote appreciation, education, and giving credit where credit is due.

Here are some great educational videos about appropriation and Asian/Black relations in context to kawaii fashion & culture

While we're not in collaboration or affiliation with all these groups, the work that they have done to bring people together as communities and celebrate inclusivity and representation is truly magnificent, moving, uplifting, and influential!β‹†Λ™βŸ‘β™‘

Moving forward We also want to celebrate and encourage representation for black people of all genders who love kawaii culture and fashion~! including black men and black masculine presenting people of any gender

Even though this movement was created by a black girl, for black girls, its also important to acknowlege and celebrate that not all black people who enjoy femininity and cuteness are girls! Black fems of all genders can enjoy cuteness and should~

Queer people make up a huge part of the kawaii fashion, art, and cosplay communities! Its important to recogize many of them are also black too.

The things black girls in the j-fashion aand cosplay community want to see change the most: MORE PLUS SIZES! Black girls have been active participants of the aforementioned communities for decades! People of all body types deserve to feel adorable ~
